Yale University: Yale, the most famous school in the state and one of the oldest in the nation, is considered one of the world's greatest universities. It was established in the 1640s by colonial clergymen in an effort to start a college in New Haven "to preserve the tradition of liberal education in the New World." The school's charter was granted in 1701 and named for Welsh merchant Elihu Yale who donated the proceeds from the sale of 9 bales of goods together with 417 books and a portrait of King George I toward establishment of the college.

The student body is composed of 11,000 students from all fifty American states and 108 countries. The Yale campus, called "the most beautiful urban campus in America" by an architecture critic, covers 310 acres and is comprised of 260 buildings.

Some of the programs at Yale include the School of Medicine, the Divinity School, Law School and the Schools of Nursing, Drama, Architecture and Management to name but a few.
